Cabaret Boston Theatre reviews
Cabaret was almost great
The Drury Lane production of Cabaret was excellent -- but could have been better. It is puzzling why the director omitted one of the very best songs from the original (Sally's "Maybe This Time") as well as the Emcee's popular "Money, Money, Money" -- but included the mediocre "Meeskite"
Patrick Andrews was marvelous in the role of the Emcee. Rebecca Finnegan did well as Fraulein Schneider and David Lively as Herr Schultz. Zarah Mahler was good as Sally Bowles, but her performance lacked the spark and pathos that we have come to expect of Sally. The choreography was excellent, but one more dance featuring Andrews would have been welcome.
Many in the audience were "of an age," but the younger spectators probably did not fully appreciate the horror of the Nazi takeover of Germany that was well understood by audiences 40-plus years ago when the play premiered.
